I can wear anything to work so long as I have fully enclosed shoes and can tie my hair back. I have to wear a lab coat, gloves and safety glasses when I am doing experiments in the lab. Sometimes I also need to wear a mask if I am working with nasty chemicals. When I have to go into the theatres to collect samples, it is a sterile area, so I have to wear surgical scrubs, a hair cover, booties to cover my shoes and a surgical mask.
I can wear most anything as long as it is reasonably professional. After all working for the CSIRO you represent Australia and I believe that means something. So I kinda go a bit “corporate” usually wearing one of these shirts:
and a pair of khaki shorts or pants and some nice comfy shoes. Since I do not work in a lab or in the field I need no special clothing. So no sexy lab coats for me.
Jeans & t-shirt. Once in a while more formal pants and long sleeve shirt. Sometimes shorts & t-shirt. There is really no dress code. I have been known to walk around barefoot around the office!
If I’m going into our DNA cleanroom I have to wear a special set of clothes just for that lab, a head to toe body suit, two pairs of gloves, booties, and a face mask. When I’m done there I can put on ‘regular’ clothes – like Elise due to health and safety I have to wear shoes with closed in shoes. In the other labs I work in, I wear a pair of gloves and a lab coat and occasionally safety glasses. Sometimes the days are long, and I’m on my feet a lot so I try to dress comfortably but I do like nice clothes, and really I can pretty much wear what I like!
My current favourite are my galaxy leggings, they are a pair of leggings with a print of the horsehead nebula from Orion on them – they are really comfortable, and just beautiful. The image on them is an actual image from the Hubble Telescope so it really is wearable science!
I have to wear long pants and steel-capped shoes, but apart from that I can wear pretty much whatever I like. You might be surprised to know that even as a chemist who spends a lot of time in a lab, I very rarely wear a lab coat – unless I’m cold and I’ve forgotten my jumper!
