Microwave heats up the food by using very short radio waves. At that frequency, water and fat absorb more energy than other materials, so we can cook things. Metal will reflect all the waves, so won’t get hot. BUT, it the metal is too close to the microwave walls, it can cause what is called arcing, which is sparks coming out. This can cause fire.
